Heidi Sipe, main subject in “Big Dreams in Umatilla” documentary
I never worried about letting my guard down and being real with Julianne because I knew that she wouldn't abuse that power but would tell the story she needed to tell and I respected that."

Jed Alger, Founder and Creative Director of Must Be Something agency
As a director, she is a beautiful combination of decisive, confident and collaborative. She approaches each project with curiosity and an open mind, always taking time to fully understand the challenge and the context, always bringing ideas to the surface that I had not imagined.

Alex Pulaski, Director of Communications, Oregon School Boards Association
"It’s not easy to interrupt someone’s life and ask them to crack open their experiences and heartaches for the world to analyze. But Julianne did it with grace and aplomb and helped create a very moving work. We loved working with her."
Kind words from collaborators
Jesse Crowell, Creative Director, Blue Chalk Media
“Julianne never fails to place respect for the humans involved in the creative process – both the subjects and the makers – above everything else and that radiates from her work in both quality and heart. She is a natural leader on any project she is a part of and I'm proud to work alongside her.”

Torrie Eagle Staff, subject, “The Promise of Oregon
“Julianne made my voice and story feel heard and important. She also has stayed in touch and available to me long after this project.”

Alicia, Creative Video, Lowe’s
“Working with Julianne is always a joy –She’s highly creative, organized, and empathetic. Her writing, cinematography, and directing skills, combined with her creative vision, execute video work that we can all be proud of.”

Conor O’Riain, main subject in “Solving for Zero” documentary
“Julianne’s ability to think on the move and seamlessly develop different directions for the story to go in was particularly impressive. My expectations were blown away when I saw the finished product. She somehow made cement and concrete, hardly the most exciting subject in the world, interesting, engaging, funny and, somehow, emotional.”

I’m a documentary film director & producer. I’ve directed and produced two feature documentaries: “Solving for Zero” (Gates Venture/Wondrium) and Big Dreams in Umatilla (OPB), the docuseries “Storefront Stories” (HBO Max/Magnolia Network), branded docs for clients such as Google, Nike, Lowe’s and Pearson Education, and documentary shorts for TIME Magazine, NBC, TED, and various nonprofits. I received my MFA in creative nonfiction writing from the University of Pittsburgh, and have spent the last three years reporting for and writing a book about the Chinook Indian Nation's fight for federal recognition.
My own adventures formed a simple belief: we protect what we love and the best way to love something is to experience it. Giving people the opportunity to experience the beauty of this wild, spectacular, and complicated world is what I strive to do in my work. Documenting and sharing human life, in all its nuanced beauty, makes the world feel small enough to relate to one another. I believe this down to my bones.
I bounce around between Portland, OR and Los Angeles, CA and am available for assignments worldwide. Please reach out for details, questions, or to say hello!
